Can I scan or photocopy an entire textbook for my personal use?

Answer

Short answer, NO. You would violate U.S. Copyright Law. Copyright laws help protect the rights of authors. You're probably safe if you want to make a copy of a few chapters now and then so you don't have to carry a heavy textbook around campus. If you make several copies of chapters to share with your friends who don't want to buy or rent the book, that's a copyright violation as well.
